Belgium lies in Western Europe, bordering the North Sea, between France and the Netherlands. It covers the area same as Maryland. Industry is concentrated mainly in the populous Flemish area in the north. With few natural resources, Belgium must import substantial quantities of raw materials and export a large volume of manufactures, making its economy unusually dependent on the state of world markets. Roughly three-quarters of its trade is with other EU countries. Public debt is nearly 100% of GDP. On the positive side, the government has succeeded in balancing its budget, and income distribution is relatively equal. Belgium began circulating the euro currency in January 2002. Belgium has made large development in industrial sector.

Its major productions include engineering and metal products, motor vehicle assembly, transportation equipment, scientific instruments, processed food and beverages, chemicals, basic metals, textiles, glass and petroleum.Export items include machinery and equipment, chemicals, diamonds, metals and metal products, foodstuffs. Telephone industry is very highly developed in Belgium. There is nationwide cellular telephone system. Its cable network is very extensive. There is complete domestic and international telephone and telegraph facility. During its history of over 2000 years, the region has almost continuously been occupied by foreign powers: from the Romans to the Spanish, the Austrians, the French, the Dutch and the Germans. This has made the Belgians critical of any form of authority, and laws, rules and regulations are not taken very seriously. There is open market economy in Belgium. It has good distribution channels and the strong consumer requirements. There are more diverse and high quality goods in the shops at relatively low prices. Belgium has succeeded in becoming top ten fashion designing industry, which was almost exclusively under the control of French, Italian and Japanese designers.Belgian people have love for the “good life”. They find it in their excellent food and drink, comfortable housing, reliable medical and social services, highly developed traffic and communications infrastructure.
